Staying on the grid in downtown DC

When Pierre L’Enfant developed the urban plan for this city in 1791, he did so following the Baroque model — creating avenues that radiate out from rectangles and leaving plenty of room for parks and lush landscaping. The city’s four quadrants spoke out from the US Capitol Building (the focal point), and most streets follow a grid-like pattern that makes DC fairly easy to navigate. (East – west streets have been named with letters, north – south streets with numbers, and diagonal streets with U.S. state names.)

Our hotel has been plopped in the center of it all, on the south side of Thomas Circle, at the point where 14th Street NW and Massachusetts Avenue NW intersect. We’re located just a half-mile from the Convention Center, a quick walk to the White House, and four blocks from the Metro (where you’ll find the orange, blue, and silver lines, making Washington Reagan National Airport one straight-shot Metro ride away).
